AAt the Maple Street market, a small repair table helps visitors mend clothes rather than replace them. The table stands beside the ticket office, not beside the cafe. Visitors bring clean clothes and tell a volunteer what needs attention. A visitor with a loose button can borrow a needle. Anyone needing a new button chooses one from a tin on the table.
BBefore work begins, each visitor writes their name on a paper label and attaches it to the item. Volunteers keep sharp tools in a wooden box, while spare fabric rests in open baskets. The box stays behind the table so young children cannot reach it. After a repair, the owner tries on the item near a mirror. The service is free, but visitors do the sewing themselves.

AOn weekday mornings, a volunteer checks the young plants in the Alder Lane greenhouse. She examines the soil before adding any water. If the surface is still damp, she leaves that tray alone. The daily notes describe this check as a way to avoid unnecessary watering. An empty measuring jug is kept on the lowest shelf, where it cannot fall onto the seedlings. Larger buckets are stored outside.
BTo inspect the corners of each tray, the volunteer lifts the leaves gently. She uses a cotton cloth to wipe soil from the tray labels, not to dry the leaves. These labels must remain readable because several plants look similar when they are small. Before leaving, she puts the jug back and hangs the cloth beside the door. The next volunteer reads the notes before repeating the same checks.

scissors 在这里表示剪刀,原文用 a pair of scissors 表达一把。
A Box Theatre Workshop
AAt a weekend workshop, families build small theatre stages from reused packaging. Each family receives a shallow box, which becomes the stage rather than being used to store tools. A tutor asks them to paint the inside black so that the figures are easy to see. The outside can be decorated later. Children sketch their characters on thick paper before cutting them out.
BThe figures are held upright by short sticks. The tutor supplies narrow strips of tape to attach the sticks, while string is used only for the curtain. A pair of scissors stays at each table. Families borrow the scissors during the session and return them before leaving.
CFor the final display, the tutor lowers the room lights. Each family places a desk lamp behind its stage. Visitors watch from the front, where the moving figures are visible through a thin screen. The finished stages remain in the workshop overnight so the paint can dry.

AAt the Harbour Clay studio, an assistant prepares a finished bowl for delivery. She checks that the glaze is dry before she starts packing. A folded cotton cloth goes across the bottom of a deep carton to support the bowl. The bowl is then wrapped in plain paper. Printed newspaper is kept for cleaning the workbench, not for wrapping finished pottery.
BThe assistant fills the spaces around the bowl with wood shavings so it cannot slide. She closes the carton with paper tape and writes the customer's address on the lid. A small card inside the carton explains how to wash the bowl. It does not include the delivery address.
CCompleted parcels wait on a metal rack near the loading door. The assistant leaves the floor clear so the delivery driver can move safely. Before collection, she records the parcel's weight in a notebook. The driver checks the address on each lid but does not open the cartons. The studio reuses cartons only when their sides are firm.

AIn the Fernwick archive, volunteers prepare old walking maps for a digital catalogue. They work on a wide table away from direct sunlight. Before handling a map, a volunteer washes and dries their hands. A curator checks each sheet for tears. Damaged maps are set aside for a specialist rather than placed under the camera.
BA volunteer uses a soft brush to remove loose dust from sound maps. The volunteer then uses glass weights to hold the corners flat. Metal clips remain in a drawer because they can mark the paper. A ruler beside the map shows its size in the photograph, while a grey card helps the camera operator check colour.
CAfter photographing a map, the volunteer saves the image with the catalogue code as its filename. The map returns to a flat folder in the storage cabinet. The curator checks that the digital image is sharp before approving it for the catalogue. Only approved images become available to readers. The volunteers do not repair torn sheets during the photography session.
